Descendants of Louis de Bourbon

In tracking the ancestry of Francis Davis, Revolutionary War veteran and great great grandfather of the grandmother my mother remembers fondly, Mamie Bronson Gillis, I stumbled upon this fascinating genealogy of Davis' wife, Tabitha DeVane. The French Bourbons

Robert of Clermont, sixth son of Louis IX of France, married (1272) Beatrice, heiress of Bourbon, and is considered the founder of the line. Robert’s son, Louis, was created (1327) 1st duc de Bourbon. The ducal title remained with the descendants of his eldest son until 1527, when Charles, duc de Bourbon, died without issue. Because of his treason, his extensive fiefs were seized by the crown and the ducal title was discontinued.    2

A younger son of Louis, 1st duc de Bourbon, gave issue to the line of Bourbon-Vendôme. The marriage (1548) of Antoine de Bourbon, duc de Vendôme, with Jeanne d’Albret added vast territories in S France (see Albret) and the title king of Navarre to his other fiefs (Vendôme, Périgord, Rouergue). From Antoine’s brother, Louis I de Condé, the houses of Condé and Conti were issued.    3

Antoine’s son became (1589) the first Bourbon king of France as Henry IV, the older branches of Louis IX’s issue having become extinct (see Valois). Henry IV was succeeded by his son, Louis XIII, and his grandson, Louis XIV. Louis XIV’s descendants ruled France (except during the French Revolution and the Napoleonic era, 1792–1814) until the deposition (1830) of Charles X (see France). With the death (1883) of Henri, comte de Chambord, grandson of Charles X, the senior French branch of Bourbon came to an end. From Louis XIV’s brother Philip the cadet branch of Bourbon-Orléans (see Orléans, family) is issued; it furnished one king, Louis Philippe (1830–48), and inherited the claim to the French crown in 1883.    4

Louis de Bourbon was the first Prince to take on the title Conde, a branch of the Royal House of Bourbon. He was a famous leader of the Hugenots.

(kôNd´) (KEY) , family name of a cadet branch of the French royal house of Bourbon. The name was first borne by Louis I de Bourbon, prince de Condé, 1530–69, Protestant leader and general. He fought the Spanish at Metz (1552) and Saint-Quentin (1557) but won little favor at court. After his conversion to Protestantism he became involved in the Conspiracy of Amboise (1560; see Amboise, conspiracy of) and escaped execution only through King Francis II’s premature death. He was restored to favor by the regent, Catherine de’ Medici, but took command of the Huguenots in the Wars of Religion (see Religion, Wars of) and was captured at Dreux (1562). Prince of Conde' from 1538 to 1552 and followed in his father's footsteps, he was married to Catherine de la Tremoville.

His son, Henri I de Bourbon, prince de Condé, 1552–88, was also a Huguenot general.

3. HENRY³ DE CONDE (HENRY², LOUIS¹ DE BOURBON)^5,6 was born 1588 in France⁷, and died 1646 in France⁸. He married CHARLOTTE DE MORENCY⁹¹⁰.

Their marriage was arranged by King Henry IV.

Henri II de Bourbon, prince de Condé, 1588–1646, French political leader, son of Henri I, was forced to leave France (1609) because of the attentions paid his wife by King Henry IV. He returned in 1610 and in 1615 formed a conspiracy against Concino Concini, who dominated the government of the regent, Marie de’ Medici, but he was bought off and later imprisoned (1616–19). Afterward he made his peace with the government, fought against the Protestants in the religious wars, and in 1643 became a member of the council of regency for King Louis XIV. His elder son, Louis II (see Condé, Louis II de Bourbon, prince de) was known as the Great Condé. Another son, Armand, founded the cadet branch of Conti. Both sons and a daughter, Mme de Longueville, were leaders in the Fronde.

"The next Prince of Conde' 1621 _ 1686, was Louis 11 de Bourbon, the son of Henry and Charlotte, and was known as "The Great Conde"'. He was said to have been the most powerful noble of France. He was a cousin of the King, a fervent leader of the Huguenots, unbelievable successful in many wars and was at twenty two years of age, France's greatest General.

King Henry IV, distressed by the horrible persecution of the Protestants by the Catholic regime, issued the "Edict of Nantes' in 1598 which granted the people religious tolerance. When Louis IV became King he revoked the "Edict of Nantes" in 1685 and when persecutions began again 400,000 Huguenots left France. 1621–86, French general, called the Great Condé; son of Henri II de Condé. Among his early victories in the Thirty Years War were those of Rocroi (1643), Freiburg (1644), Nördlingen (1645), and Lens (1648). In the series of outbreaks known as the Fronde he was at first loyal to the court, but his later intrigues and ambitions caused his arrest in 1650. This precipitated the Fronde of the Princes against Cardinal Mazarin, chief councillor of state during the regency of Anne of Austria. The nobles forced Mazarin to release Condé (1651), who became leader of the rebellious army of the princes and allied himself with Spain against France. After the disintegration of the Fronde and the return to power of Mazarin, Condé was (1653–58) commander of Spanish forces against France. In the final stage of the war he was defeated (1658) in the Battle of the Dunes (see Dunes, Battle of the). After the Peace of the Pyrenees (1659) between France and Spain, he was pardoned and returned to court. He fought in the Dutch War for King Louis XIV, defeating William of Orange at Seneff (1674) and forcing Raimondo Montecucculi to retreat from the Rhine (1675). His last years were spent in retirement at Chantilly.

Notes for MARGARET DE CONDE:

According to the Jenrette Web Page and a DeVane Family pamphlet I received from Don Inman, Margaret is the niece of Prince Louis II de Bourbon (The Great Conde). He was a leader in the French Religious Wars. Margaret escaped from France dressed as a page to her husband, Thomas DeVane. They first went to Scotland, then to Barbados and finally to NC in about 1720. They lived in the Black River area of New Hanover County.

I'm not so sure what his sources were. I'm having trouble reconciling the dates of Louis II and the approximate date of Margaret's birth.

Our Princess Margaret mentioned above as a niece of the "Great Conde"', disquised as a page boy. When leaving France for some reason was unable to secure passage on the same boat with her husband, she said she could remedy that, she went home disquised herself as her husband's page, on returning her own Father and husband did not recognize her. Her husband told the Officials as his page was rather delicated he would take "him" in the stateroom with him, escaped to Scotland with her young husband, Thomas DeVane, a Nobleman. In the name of God Amen. The Twentieth day of May in the year of our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and sixty five. I Thomas Devane of Black River, in the Provence of North Carolina, gent, being very sick and weak in body, but of perfect mind and memory, thanks be given to God therefor, calling to mind the mortality of the body and knowing that it appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and Testament, that is to say, principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hand of God that gave it; for my body, I recommend it to the earth, to be buried in a Christian like and decent manner at the discretion of my Executors, nothing doubting, but, at the general resurrection, I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God; and as touching such wordly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life with, I give, devise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form.

The typed in copy of James POITEVENT's will that I received from Don Inman via email, calls his wife "Mary" rather than "Margaret". I'm guessing that this Mary is really a nickname for Margaret and that this Mary doesn't exist as a separate child of Thomas and Margaret.

I am making this assumption since a daughter named Mary CORBETT is mentioned in the will and Thomas DEVANE mentions having a son named Thomas CORBETT. Another source had mentioned that it was Mary's sister, Margaret, who married Thomas CORBETT, but now I'm not so certain.

According to Larry Duncan: He had it passed on to him that after James Portervant died, Mary married Thomas Corbett II and they had at least 4 children together.

Going by my intuition based on her husband, James', will calling his wife "Mary" and the above statement, I'm guessing Margaret's nickname was "Mary" and that Margaret did NOT have a sister named Mary.

Well, this gets a little weirder. The LDS Online site (http://32.96.111.13/Search/af/ancestral_file_frame.asp?recid=11940137 ) has Margaret b. abt 1738 and marrying a JONES. It is the Unknown DeVANE that marries the Poidevent.
