Marcellus Steadman Spann, Philip Norman Spann, Henry Fletcher Spann came to Dothan from Fountain Florida where they had a successful naval stores business after leaving Bamberg, South Carolina and started Spann Farms. Henry Barr Spann came in 1901 but then moved away.

Watson, Fred, The Hub of the Wiregrass, p. 46-47. "Brannon Stand"

The Spanns also opened a store here and sold whiskey on payday as well as other supplies needed by the families. That store burned and was rebuilt with Mr. Stewart owning he store in partnership with the Spanns. It was a general mercantile store and three or 4 clerks were employed to serve the customers.

The Spanns built their own school houses for children of farm employees.

John Phillip Shealy came to Dothan to live with Steadman Spann in order to attend High School. There is a picture of the store that Shealy operated with the Spanns with "Wellie" standing in the door.

Steadman Spann Recalled as "Years Ahead Farmer

When M. S. Spann of Bamberg, S.C. moved southward early this century a new era in agriculture was about to begin. when he died at 77 on May 12, 1952, Steadman Spann--as Dothan and the surrounding country knew him-- was "years ahead of most farmers".  It had always been that way. He loved his farming as few men loved the farm.

The vast estate which produced bales of cotton by the thousands just west of Dothan was designated as the Spann Brothers Farm--owned by P. N. Spann, H. F. Spann, and M. S. Spann. But it was the latter who made the wheels go 'round. His kind of management was what most farmers aspire to learn. His practices were the kind that made money. Steadman Spann, with the cooperation of his brothers, put together an 1875 acre "workshop" for this farmer who loved his work and the wide open spaces. And the Wiregrass farmer profited from the experience of knowing or hearing about this pioneer. Maybe for some the only profit was a trip past the farm which lay along Highway 84. But here was inspiration. No man could take a 10 mile trip to town and back by wagon without wanting to be a better farmer from having seen the Spann place. The cotton was always greener. The oats were always taller. The pea vine hay always gathered behind the oats, was much more luxuriant. --Here was farming with the Steadman Spann touch". He lived in Dothan, five miles away. But when the "getting up " bell rang before day for his farmers to rise, it usually was Spann's hand that pulled the bell.

T. A. West. Jr., of Dothan, who married Spann's only daughter declares: He had more energy than any man I ever saw--until his health began to fail." West can recall that when "I was just a youngster in grammar school" Spann's picture was in the textbooks throughout the State. He and some of his modern ideas were used to educate the younger generation of farmers. He was that kind of farmer.

Early days of the Spann Brothers Farm were devoted to the production of cotton, sometimes as much as 1000 acres at a time. And many of those years Spann Brothers Farm sent as many as 1000 bales to the gin. When harvesting time became such an ordeal with limited manpower a problem, there was more diversification.

Most of Spann's labor came southward with him from South Carolina. Negro families who migrated to be hear "Mr. Steadman" had a home as long as they wanted it. Evidence is offered by the fact that four or five widows--all in their 90's -- still are provided for although they have outlived and outworked heir usefulness. "Aunt Hester Grant' , one of them, is something of a "landmark":. She has been there as long as the farm. "Nobody knows how old she is", members of the family point out. Spann had a system of getting along with the workers when he was present. When he was absent his work went on under the skilled supervision of such "go-betweens" as john Britt, negro, who died not many years ago. "John couldn't read or write', it was recalled. But he could figure. Quick as a flash Britt could tell how much money 75 cattle ought to bring on the market. His kind of work and ability to supervise made farming with the "Steadman Spann touch" easier.

Steadman Spann and his brothers built their own school houses for children of the farm employees. He thought both of his farming and of the benefit of those who helped him. Those who lived with him and outlived him will say today: "There never was but one Mr. Steadman Spann." And the way they say it makes you realize they're paying tribute to a great farmer.
